Alien City

ALIEN CITY is an entirely virtual city in cyberspace, its aural and visual appearance composed of elements taken from different cities all over the world in different periods of time. The city is in a hybrid state of constant change, of in-betweens.

Since 1999 ALIEN CITY occasionally materialises for short periods of time in special locations, giving up its pure virtual character. It incorporates pieces of the found realities and morphs them with its historical appearances. Something new emerges - the city is on the move again.

On Sept. 21st, 2001, Alien City materialised in the Brahmsfoyer of the musikhalle hamburg on the occasion of the hamburger musikfest, followed by a materialisation at musikprotokoll within steirischer herbst 01 for 26 hours. The Dom im Berg, a huge cave located in the Schlossberg in the center of Graz turned into a scene for a complex manifestation: two versions of the theatrical performance "Dialogue of Two Passersby Meeting In The Crowd" - in between the continuously ongoing installation of the virtual city.

Although the two locations presented extremely different settings, the technical and logistic efforts involved were similar. We found that getting 5 flightcases packed with equipment through airport security in late September 2001 was as challenging and time consuming as mounting 6 overlapping projectors. Installing wireless modems on the roof of the hamburger musikhalle can be as tedious as wiring two 24/8/2 consoles to a total of 30 channels of amping in Graz. Last but not least: synchronising DVD-Players in pre triple-head times was easier than projecting around Brahms.
